Frequently Asked Questions
This practice is private pay for two reasons:
1. There is currently no billing structure via medical services plan to pay nurse practitioners. Unlike medical doctors who can bill fee for service, nurse practitioners are paid for by their associated health region. Dr. Remi does not work for a health region.
2. In order to avoid long wait times for publically funded assessments, Dr. Remi has chosen to offer her services privately. To date, most extended health insurance companies only reimburse psychiatrists, and sometimes psychologists. This is an outdated, insurance corporation serving practice, as diagnoses from medical providers trained in this specialty are valid and reliable. There are unacceptably long wait times for publicly funded assessments (both in women's health and ADHD care). We deserve answers to our key health concerns more quickly and this one-sided policy must be updated. Until then, you can try to submit your claim under "nursing services" as Dr. Remi is a NURSE Practitioner. Dr. Remi is also willing to write a leter of support on your behalf.
Screening tools are evidence-based questionnaires designed to serve as a starting point for deeper clinical conversatio--not a standalone diagnosis. When a provider relies solely on a numerical score, they miss essential context: how you interpreted each question, what your daily reality looks like, and what underlying factors are driving those feelings.
A elevated score simply indicates that a condition (such as anxiety, depression, or ADHD) warrants closer evaluation; it does not explain the why. Dr. Remi explores your responses in the context of your overall life and health history, working alongside you to uncover the root causes of your symptoms and create a genuinely individualized care plan.
"You drive your own bus" is often Dr. Remi's response. If a medication fits within your overall treatment goals, health history, and personal needs, it may certainly be worth exploring together.
With that said, understanding how treatments should be selected—versus how they are commonly prescribed—helps explain why a medication that works wonders for a friend might not be the right fit for you:
-
Independent, Evidence-Based Medicine vs. Industry Promotion: Prescribing habits can often be shaped by targeted pharmaceutical marketing. Drug representatives frequently host clinicians for sponsored information sessions centered on a single branded product. These presentations rarely provide balanced, head-to-head comparisons against suitable alternative therapies, leading prescribers to develop comfort with only one specific drug. Staying current across all available options requires continuous effort. Dr. Remi works directly with you to evaluate the full spectrum of therapies, helping determine what aligns best with your unique physiology, comfort level, and side-effect tolerances.
-
Tailored Care vs. Habitual Prescribing: Clinicians frequently lean on a narrow rotation of medications they feel most familiar prescribing. Dr. Remi is committed to continuously expanding her clinical knowledge across both established and newly emerging treatments. Through true shared decision-making, she openly discusses the pros, cons, and nuances of each option so you can decide as a team on the safest, most effective path forward.
Let's face it. Life can impact our symptoms. We know that a lack of sleep (which can be caused by stress) can reduce focus, reduce our capacity for social connection and exercise, cause us to change our diet to include more sweet and salty snacks and engage in risky substances or behaviours (e.g., drink a lot of coffee!). All these 6 health pillars are interconnected. There are speific medications and scenarios where utilizing a flexible dosing regime may prove beneficial (discuss with your healthcare provider before chaning your dose yourself).
Add hormone fluctuations, particularly in youth, or in peri-menopause, and a one-size fits all approach rarely fits. Where applcable (such as with psychostimulants and peri/menopausal hormone therapy), your treatment can act as a "tool in your toolbox" where a multi-tool approach is key-- lifestyle management, behavioural therapy, and flexible medication dosing. With the support and advice of your healthcare provider, you may learn how to titrate medication doses effetively so you can choose not only the tool, but how to use it.
Yes and no. For individuals assigned female at birth (AFAB), hormones are meant to fluctuate until menopaus--these rhythmic shifts exist specifically to support fertility. Because of this, the reasons why hormones may warrant balancing can range from extreme mood shifts, painful or heavy periods, or simply because a woman does not deisre fertility. or a period The most reliable medical way to "balance" or flatten these natural peaks and valleys is by using combined hormonal contraception (such as the birth control pill, patch, or vaginal ring), which suppresses ovulation and provides steady hormone levels. (Progestin-only IUDs act primarily at the level of the uterus and do not consistently override ovarian cycles.) Despite widespread wellness claims, there is currently no evidence-based herbal or dietary supplement that provides this type of cycle stabilization.
If under the age of 40 and you have cycle concerns, this can be addressed at your next visit as a part of your comprehensive treatment plan for the condition you are managing (ADHD or 6-pillar health). If >40 and this is related to peri-menopause or menopause, please book in under that specialized program. We offer combined ADHD and peri-menopausal health packages, peri-menopausal health alone. 6 pillar health includes support for all your health concerns (lifestyle, chronic disease management and reversal, obesity management), and will include a review of all heatlh systems including reproductive health.
Evidence shows us that the average age of menopause is 51.5. The average duration of peri-menopause is 2-10 years. If an individual is experiencing what they feel is peri-menopause before age 40, this could suggest conditions that should be assessed and managed by a specialist (gynecologist, endocrinologist or otherwise). Dr. Remi is able to direct you to the right specialty, should this be of concern. Please do not accept "you are too young for peri-menopause" as an answer. Your experiences and symptoms must be validated and investigated.
ABSOLUTELY! ALL individuals are welcome :)
